By the end of 1979, Alaap’s first album was released. This was an overnight success, taking the Punjabi music scene by storm.

The second album was released in 1982. This included the all time favourite ‘Bhabiye Ni Bhabiye’ which became an international best-seller and marked the beginning of a new era for Bhangra music.

For the first time ever in the history of Bhangra music, a sound track that had been produced in the UK was taken to be used in a major India film ‘Nimmo’. The first ever Triple Gold disc in Bhangra music was also awarded to Alaap for the highest sales of their first 3 albums.

Alaap produced the first double album in the history of Bhangra music. The song ‘Jind Mahi’ was again taken in another Indian film ‘Yaari Jatt Di’.

This album was a great success and this time 3 of the sound tracks were copied and used in major Bollywood films. The track ‘Chunni Ud Ud Jae’ was copied in the film ‘Dil’; the track ‘Pyar De Pujari’ was copied in the film ‘Hatya’ and the title track ‘Nach Mundeya’ was copied in the film ‘Beta’. ‘Chunni Ud Ud Jae’ was also used in ‘The Talking Book Series’ released by WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) to represent the Asian music scene.

By public demand, Alaap released a religious album as a tribute to where they originally started from.

The seventh album was a highly technical album ahead of its time. The song ‘Chori Chori’ was used in a film called ‘Entangled Web’ and also in a film called ‘Uljhan’.

Another first in the history of Bhangra music was made with the release of their eighth album. This time the album was recorded with the queen of melodies Asha Bhosle. This was a best seller and received a platinum disc.

Anuradha Paudwal, another top artist from the Indian Film Industry collaborated with Alaap for this album. The album was recorded in India and a number of songs were used in a film called ‘Pagri Sambhal Jatta’.

The title of this album summed it up perfectly as this was simply the best.
